ITINERARY FOR 5-DAY CLIMB MT TOUBKAL

During this trek in the Moroccan High Atlas, you will ascend Jebel Toubkal, the Maghreb's and North Africa's highest point. You will enjoy Berber hospitality at Toubkal refuge and climb to Toubkal mountain in five days trekking.

DAY 1: MARRAKECH –IMI OUGHLAD –TIZI N'TACHTE –TIZIANE

Early departure from Marrakech for a pleasant drive south through the moulay brahim gorge and upper valleys to arrive at the higher foothills of the western high atlas mountains and our trailhead of imi oughlad with the jbel toubkal, at 4167m the highest peak in Morocco, Aglzim 3650m, and Aksoual 38847m looming ahead of us. We disembark from our vehicle and meet up with the berber muleteer team. We set off in a north-westerly direction for a 2-hour acclimatization hike up switchback mule tracks, passing through cornfields, woods, pine and juniper to the Tizn'tachete, where we will pause to look back down on the imlikl and ait oussaden valleys before continuing for another half hour to imi n'ifri and our field picnic. Then a hike south-west down a dirt track to Assif n' ait oussaden and the red clay terraced town of Tiziane (1750 m) for our lodging in a bivouac or gite.

DAY 2: TIZZIANE - TIZI N'TAGHRHOURTE - D'KNT

After breakfast, we will begin our hike up the Assif n'ait oussaden valley, passing through the wallnut groves, up to Tizin'taghrhourte , and through a rare almost flat stretch to Assaka spring, where we will stop for our field picnic in the midst of awesome silence after about 2 and a half hours of relatively easy walking. Our afternoon hike brings us down through the forest boundaries until we reach the berber settlement of D'knt or agouns n Assoul, where we will eat and spend the night in a gite.

DAY 3: D'KNT - TIZI N'TAGDALTE - TIZI OUSSEM

We began our three-hour hike up through walnut woods and maize and barley fields to welcome the numerous sheep and goatherders – and women and children hunched over with 20kg bundles of faggots and dried herbs. We will travel the tizin'tagdalte to the descent amid the juniper trees till we reach a tiny spring nestled among the trees, where we will halt for our lunch. We set off down winding higher slopes paths for about 3 hours to reach a little river at the entrance of the valley of Assif n'ait oussaden. From here, we approach the town of Tizi oussem (1850m), then ascend to the summer village of Tamsoult, where we will stay in a gite.

DAY 4: TIZI OUSSEM -- TIZI M'ZZIK -- IMLIL

Trek to Azib Tamsoulte's little waterfall before returning to cross the Tizi 'n Mzik pass (2,500m). We enter the main Toubkal valley at Imlil (1,900m), where we will eat lunch and spend the night in our Guesthouse Dar Adrar or a similar location.

DAY 5: IMLIL - TIZI N TAMATERT - IKKISS - AGERSIOUAL - MARRAKECH

A 6- to 7-hour trek through Berber hamlets and across two mountain passes, with views of Jbel Oukameden in the distance. The path is round in order to take in as much landscape and natural beauty as possible. Today's walk begins by travelling east from Imlil (1,740m) through the Tamatert Valley before turning north across the Tizi n'Tamatert pass and down into the Imenane valley past the Berber settlement of Tinerhourhine. This valley is then continued north through winding mule roads past almond, walnut, and apple plantations, as well as terraced Berber hamlets, to the towns of Ikiss and up to Amssakrou. A picnic lunch is usually served here, with a spectacular view of Jbel Oukameden and the two passes, Tizi n'Ou Arg and Tizi n'Tiratene. The return route is through the pass, Tizi n'Aguerssiouâl, then through the Assif n'At Mizane Valley, and back to Imlil.

The walk then continues along mule trails and past escarpments through the Tizi n'Aguerssiouâl Pass and on to the village of Aguerssiouâl in the Assif n'At Mizane Valley and then south back up the valley towards the peaks of Jbel Toubkal, Aguelzim, and Aksouâl to the villages of Taddart andEnd of our 5-Day Toubkal Ascent Mount Trek.
