ITINERARY FOR 6 DAYS MOUNTAIN TOUBKAL TREK

Climb the highest point in North Africa in six days. Enjoy round-trip transportation from Marrakech to Imlil at the end of this adventure. Hike with an English-speaking guide, a local chef, and mules. The hike to the peak is strenuous, but it requires no prior mountaineering expertise, and the panoramic view from the top makes the effort worthwhile.

DAY 1: MARRAKECH - IMLIL - TACHEDDIRT

After breakfast, we depart Marrakech for Imlil via Asni. Imlil is a bustling market town and the main trailhead for hikers. There is a steady flow of people coming down from the mountains, as well as an equal amount of activity from those prepared to start on their trip. We meet our mule team and continue traveling along the valley towards Tacheddirt, some 8 kilometers beyond Imlil. As we near the pass at Tizi n'Tamatert, the route begins to ascend (2,279m). We then descend to the lovely town of Ouaneskra before continuing for another half-hour or so to Tacheddirt (2,300m), where we usually camp by the river.

DAY 2: TACHEDDIRT - AZIB LIKEMT

After crossing the valley, we begin a long, sluggish rise to the Tizi Likemt pass (3,555m). The going is difficult since there is a lot of loose scree on the ground. Of the summit, we get our first good look at the Toubkal massif before a long downward descent to the settlement of Azib Likemt, where we'll spend the night.

DAY 3: AZIB LIKEMT - TIZI N'OURAI - AMSOUZERT

This long but very simple day takes us across a range of scenery. We have a better perspective of the Toubkal massif from Tizi n'Ououraine (3,120m), including the summit, the east face, and the Ifni Dome (3,876m). The walk continues on to Amsouzert, one of the region's most stunning settlements, where we spend the night – dormitory-style – in a basic village Gite.

DAY 5: AMSOUZERT - IFNI LAKE

We tour numerous little settlements west of Amsouzert on our route to Ifni Lake, the only lake in the mountain. It's a striking site, surrounded by steep mountains and massive piles of rubble, and it's extraordinarily deep. We plan to arrive about lunchtime and spend the afternoon lounging on the beach. This is where we'll be camping tonight.

DAY 5: IFNI LAKE - NELTER HUT

We should be well and acclimatized by now, and ready to undertake the most difficult day of the trek. We make our way up a seemingly unending scree slope on a steep trail. Finally, we arrive at Tizi n'Ouanoums (3,664m), a small ledge between two rock shafts. It's a lengthy zigzag downhill from here to Nelter Hut, a mountain shelter where we'll spend the night (or alternatively camp outside).

DAY 6: MT. TOUBKAL SUMMIT - IMLIL

We set out before daybreak, using a well-trodden path to the peak. If circumstances are favorable, we should get at the peak in no more than 2-3 hours, when we will enjoy panoramic views of the entire Atlas range and the Marrakech plains beyond. Returning to the trailhead, we descend quickly via the towns of Sidi Chamharouch and Aremd before following the Mizane River along a well-forested track to Imlil. If you stay in Marrakech, you will be driven there at the conclusion of the day. End of our 6 Days Mountain Toubkal Trek.
