ITINERARY FOR 3 DAYS BERBER VILLAGES TREK WITH TOUBKAL ASCENT

Enjoy the scenic views of the towns as you make your way to Imlil village, where you will meet your mountain guide and muleteer. This three-day trek through Berber towns in the Atlas Mountains is a wonderful excursion outside of Marrakech.

DAY 1: MARRAKECH - IMLIL

Departure by car from Marrakech at 8 a.m. for a 1h20 drive south up the Moulay Brahim Gorges, Asni weekly market every Saturday, then to Agersioual (1,600m), set in the upper level foothills of the Western High Atlas mountains, where you will leave the vehicle and meet your local guide before setting out on a 12km excursion to the Berber village of AIkkiss (1,700m), over Tizi n (2200m). After lunch inside a Berber home (or by the river), continue going up the Imnane valley and through the Tizi n Tamter pass (2779m). From here, one can see the two valleys, down into the Imlil Valley and back down to the Imnane valley. Another 1h30 journey downhill will take you to the town of Imlil, where you will dine at the lovely Dar Adrar Guest house.  Enjoy this 3-Day Toubkal & Berber Villages trek.

DAY 2: IMLIL - SIDI CHAMHAROUSH - TOUBKAL REFUGE

After breakfast, we set off on our journey through the Mizane Valley, first to the town of Aremd and then to the shrine of Sidi Chamarouch. Aremd, the valley's main settlement, is built on a moraine spur overlooking the valley bottom and offers a unique combination of traditional terraced farming, gites, and roadways that appear to be continuously gridlocked by goats and cattle. Local Berber villagers have farmed these grounds for decades, producing maize, potatoes, and walnuts from the hard topography. Continuing east and across the flood plain, we follow mule trails up into the steep rocky cliffs above the valley. After crossing the river, we arrive to the pastoral shrine of Sidi Chamarouch, which draws both tourists and pilgrims (although only Muslims are allowed to cross the stone bridge to visit the marabout shrine itself). The settlement is a chaotic cluster of dwellings that appear to melt together into an anarchic mess near a little waterfall. The path continues to rise gradually from here, curving and zigzagging its way up to the snowline and the Toukbal Refuge (3206m), our overnight destination.

DAY 3: TREK TO SUMMIT OF JEBEL TOUBKAL(4165M); RETURN TO IMLIL - MARRAKECH

We set out early this morning for the summit of Jebel Toukbal, Northern Africa's highest peak. Our path leads us up the south cirque, across the creek above the refuge, and then into one of the mountain's several scree fields, where we must negotiate a seemingly endless carpet of pebbles and rocks. The walking is quite easy, although the scree and altitude make it challenging in places; nonetheless, the vistas along the route make the excursion more than worthwhile. After cresting the ridgeline, we arrive on the plateau, from where it is just a short walk to the top, where the views of the surrounding area are stunning. There are unlimited views in every direction from here, from the Marrakesh Plain to the High Atlas in the north to the Anti-Atlas and the Sahara in the south. Pliny, the famous Roman scholar, once characterized the High Atlas Mountains as "the most wonderful mountains in all of Africa," and it's easy to see why from our vantage position high above the valley. We then retrace down the mountain and walk back towards Imlil Prior, retracing our route. To return to Marrakech by car. End of our 2023 3-Day Toubkal & Berber Villages Trek.
